Pest control in Healesville
Healesville was surveyed as a town on the Watts River in 1864 and named after Richard Heales, Premier of Victoria from 1860 to 1861.

A town that feeds its visitors
Healesville's tourist trade now turns on the Yarra Valley's wine and food: cafés and restaurants in town, the Healesville Organic Market, the hotels. Every one of those kitchens has to take all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate any that get in. A heavy cockroach infestation is a job for a licensed operator, not a can of spray. Spiders and insects has more for food businesses.

A heritage town
The Grand Hotel went up in 1888 and Gracedale House a year later. The Memo was built as a soldiers' memorial hall in 1924, and the old court house on Harker Street is now the tourist information centre. About half of Healesville's land carries a heritage overlay on the planning maps.

The termite designation
All of Yarra Ranges is designated as an area where buildings are likely to be attacked by termites. New building work has to be protected. For a house already standing, the usual check is a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3, and any treatment needs a pest controller whose licence covers timber pests. Termites explains both standards.
Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031), Standards Australia: AS 4349.3-2010 and Department of Health: pest control licence applications.
The Watts River and the land around the town
The town sits on the Watts River, a tributary of the Yarra. More than half of the suburb's land is public land on the planning maps, and over a quarter is green wedge farming land. Sawmilling, horticulture and viticulture are among the town's main industries. A little under a tenth is under the flood overlay. Water left standing after rain is where mosquitoes breed, so tip it out. Deer go to the council's deer program on 1300 368 333.

Nests in the garden, snakes on the path
Yarra Ranges treats wasp nests on council land only. One on your property is yours to have dealt with, and wasps and bees says how. Snakes are protected, and it is illegal to capture, harm or kill one. The council won't remove them, so call a licensed snake controller; 136 186 has the list.
