Pest control in Gruyere
Gruyere has orchards, cattle and wineries, and not a single block zoned for houses.

No town blocks at all
Gruyere's history is in dairying. Farmers here grow apples and pears and run cattle, and there are several wineries. The planning maps bear that out: about seven tenths of the land is green wedge and farming, about a fifth is rural living and conservation, and none of it is zoned residential.
So most pest questions here are a landholder's. Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act an owner must take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, eradicate them. The Act itself lists no species; Cardinia's council names wild rabbits as one. Deer have been reported across the ranges and the valley for about ten years, and Yarra Ranges runs a deer program with harvesters, volunteer shooters and fencing advice (1300 368 333).

Rat bait in the farm shed
The second-generation rat poisons were suspended for a year from 24 March 2026, and the regulator has certified that they should be restricted chemical products. Where they can be used, it is only under the Gazette instructions, and loose throw packs only inside tamper-resistant bait stations. Anyone baiting a shed should know which product is going down. Rats and mice sets out the alternatives.

Wet ground
About a tenth of Gruyere is marked on the planning maps as land subject to flooding. The Department of Health's advice on mosquitoes is to remove stagnant water near the house and to use repellent.

Termites and the licence
Gruyere is inside Yarra Ranges' designated termite area. A new house or extension needs termite protection. Treating termites takes a technician whose licence includes timber pests, and the Department of Health's register shows every current licence. The licence explains how to check.
Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031), Department of Health: pest control licence applications and Department of Health: find a licensed pest control operator.
Gruyere's neighbours, one council
- Coldstream, Badger Creek, Wandin North, Seville, Seville East and Woori Yallock
- All Yarra Ranges, so the termite designation and the deer program are the same on every side.
What changes across the line is the land. Five of those six have at least a few streets zoned for town houses; Badger Creek, like Gruyere, has none.
