Beside the Sanctuary and Coranderrk
Badger Creek is near Healesville Sanctuary and the former Coranderrk reserve, now the Coranderrk Bushland. The weir in the Badger Creek reserve, built in 1909, feeds Silvan Reservoir. About a sixth of the land is park or reserve on the planning maps.
Houses this close to bush get possums in the roof. They are protected wildlife, and it is illegal to trap or disturb wildlife without a permit. A brushtail may be trapped humanely, but it has to be released on the same property within 50 m of where it was caught, and taking it further is prohibited. So the lasting fix is to find the gap and close it. Possums goes through it.

Rat bait on a bush edge
The strongest rat and mouse baits, the second-generation anticoagulants, have been suspended for a year from 24 March 2026. Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks are among the birds found dead with dangerous levels of them. Where a garden runs into bush, that is reason enough to start with traps and proofing. Paddocks and heritage
More than half of Badger Creek is green wedge farming land. On a farm, the Catchment and Land Protection Act makes the landowner take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names wild rabbits. About a quarter of the land carries a heritage overlay, and MacKenzie Cottage at the Sanctuary is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The whole shire is a designated termite area. New building work has to be protected.
