Flood ground and wet springs

More than a quarter of Coldstream is under the flood overlay on the planning maps, land that can go under water in a flood. Coldstream gets about 757 mm of rain a year, on around 159 days, and the rain peaks in late winter and spring.

Standing water is where mosquitoes breed. The Department of Health says to get rid of stagnant water around the house and to use repellent against bites.

Almost all farmland

Nearly all of Coldstream is green wedge, with several farms and the Chandon winery; suburban housing is barely one part in seventy. That puts most pest questions here on the landowner. The Catchment and Land Protection Act requires the owner to take reasonable steps against established pest animals: stop their spread and, as far as possible, get rid of them. Wild rabbits are one, in the words of Cardinia's council.

Deer are on the state's peri-urban control plan, with Yarra Ranges among its partners. The council's deer program offers DeerScan reporting, harvesters and advice on fencing; its officer is on 1300 368 333.

Coldstream Brewery and the Chandon winery are both here. Under the Food Standards Code, a food business must take all practicable measures to stop pests getting onto the premises and to eradicate any that do.

Termites, wasps and snakes in Yarra Ranges

Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area across the whole shire. A new house or extension in Coldstream needs termite protection; a detached shed or garage doesn't. The council treats wasp nests only on its own land, so one on a farm is the owner's to have treated, and it won't remove snakes.
