Pest Control in the Yarra Valley

Pest control in Chirnside Park

Chirnside Park was the Chirnside family's Mooroolbark Park estate until its subdivision in 1956, and two-thirds of it is still green wedge.

The Chirnside estate, then the subdivisions

George Chirnside moved his family's stud herds here from Werribee Park in 1921, onto the property then called Mooroolbark Park. The Shire of Lillydale approved its subdivision in 1956, and the name Chirnside Park came in 1962. The housing grew from there: the original 18-hole golf course is now the Cloverlea estate.

Even so, about two-thirds of the suburb is still green wedge on the planning maps, and less than a fifth is suburban housing. Wineries, orchards and livestock farms are part of it.

Pest animals on the farm side

Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act, the owner of the land has to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, to get rid of them, so on a farm or orchard block the job falls to you. The Act lists no species, but Cardinia's council names wild rabbits among them. If you pay a business to do it with pesticides, it needs a pest control licence, and the pest animal authorisation is the one to look for. The licence page explains how to check.

Down by the Yarra

The Heritage Golf and Country Club, in the north-west corner, runs down to the Yarra River, and about a twelfth of Chirnside Park is under the flood overlay. Low ground that holds water breeds mosquitoes. Removing stagnant water and using repellent is the Department of Health's advice.

Termites: one rule for the whole shire

Chirnside Park is entirely in Yarra Ranges, which is designated under the Building Regulations as prone to termites. New houses and extensions need termite protection; a detached shed or garage doesn't. Termites covers inspections of houses already built.
