A suburb of houses and gardens
Two-thirds of Mooroolbark is ordinary suburban housing on the planning maps, and only about a twentieth is park or reserve. Most of it drains to Brushy Creek, a Yarra tributary that runs through almost entirely urban land. Bickleigh Vale, a 10-hectare garden subdivision, is on the Victorian Heritage Register. In a suburb this built-up, pest control is mostly about the house itself: the roof space, the walls, the subfloor.

A possum in the roof
Brushtail possums are protected. One can be trapped humanely, but it has to be released on the same property, within 50 m of where it was caught; taking it further is prohibited. Traps come from the council or a licensed wildlife controller. That makes the real job closing the gap it came in by, or it will be back. Possums has the detail.

Rat bait after March 2026
The strongest rat and mouse poisons, the second-generation anticoagulants, were suspended for a year from 24 March 2026 and made restricted chemical products. They are used only under the conditions in the Gazette, and loose throw packs only inside tamper-resistant bait stations. BirdLife found Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice covers what a pest controller can still use.

Termites
Every address in the suburb sits in Yarra Ranges, which is designated from end to end as an area where buildings are likely to be attacked by termites. New building work must be protected, except a detached shed or garage. For an existing house, the check is a timber pest inspection, and treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests.
