Gulf Station and the old town
Yarra Glen was Yarra Flats until the railway came in 1889. The Grand Hotel dates from 1888, and Gulf Station on the Melba Highway is on the Victorian Heritage Register, along with a prefabricated timber house on the property. The planning maps carry ten heritage places in the locality.

The termite rule
The whole of Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area. New building work has to be protected; an existing building is checked with a timber pest inspection, and treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests. A detached shed or garage needs no protection. Termites has the standards.

The pub and race days
The Grand Hotel is National Trust-listed. Yarra Valley Racing holds about nine race meetings a year, the Yarra Glen Cup among them, and the harness racing club races at its track in town. A kitchen serving those crowds is a food business under the Food Standards Code, which requires all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate any that get in.

Green wedge all round
The town is small: suburban housing is about one part in thirty of Yarra Glen on the planning maps, and about five-sixths is green wedge. About a tenth is under the flood overlay. On farmland, the Catchment and Land Protection Act puts the duty to control established pest animals on the landowner; Cardinia's council names wild rabbits as one. Deer are handled through Yarra Ranges' deer program, on 1300 368 333.
Snakes are protected, and Yarra Ranges won't remove them; 136 186 has a list of licensed snake controllers. Who to call sorts the other animals.
