Pest control in Tarrawarra
Tarrawarra is a bend of the Yarra River and the farmland around it, home to a Trappist abbey that runs a beef farm and bakes altar breads.

The slow water
The name is said to mean “slow waters”, for the arc the Yarra River makes here. A third of Tarrawarra's land is under the flood overlay on the planning maps. Mosquitoes breed in still water, and the health advice is to get rid of any that stands around a property after the flats drain.

Almost all farmland
Nearly every hectare is green wedge farming land, the monks of Tarrawarra Abbey among the farmers with their beef herd. A landowner has to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, get rid of them, and Cardinia's council names wild rabbits as one. Deer go to the council's deer program on 1300 368 333. The who to call page sorts out the rest.

Altar breads, a winery and a gallery
The abbey also makes Tarrawarra Eucharistic Breads, and TarraWarra Estate, a winery on part of the old Syme property, opened in 1983. Any business handling food has to take all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate any that get in.

Termites
Yarra Ranges is designated for termites. New building work here has to be protected. A detached shed doesn't. Termites covers the rest.
Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031) and Building and Plumbing Amendment Regulations 2026 (Vic), S.R. No. 38/2026, reg 12.
Along the river and away from it
- Yarra Glen, Yering and Coldstream
- More Yarra flats and flood overlay, mostly farmland.
- Healesville and Dixons Creek
- A town with shops and older buildings, and hill country with more bush. Same council and the same termite designation throughout.
