Most of it is flood overlay
About seven-tenths of Yering is under the flood overlay on the planning maps, and none of it is zoned for suburban housing. Low ground that holds water after rain breeds mosquitoes; the Department of Health's advice is to remove stagnant water and use repellent.

Cattle, horses and wine
The Ryrie brothers brought 250 head of stock here in 1837, and Yering has been farmed since. Yarra Valley Dairy runs 500 cattle off the Melba Highway and makes cheese, Windsor Park Equine Centre agists horses on 247 hectares, and Yering Range Vineyard is here. Chateau Yering, Paul de Castella's 1854 house, is now a hotel with a restaurant, and Yeringberg's winery and stables are on the Victorian Heritage Register.
The food businesses among them are held to the Food Standards Code: all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate them. On the grazing land, the landowner must take reasonable steps against established pest animals under the Catchment and Land Protection Act; Cardinia's council names wild rabbits as one.
