Paddocks against the bush

Dixons Creek is rural: 344 people at the 2021 census, and a small primary school. On the planning maps about seven-tenths of it is green wedge, a fifth is park or reserve and about a tenth is rural conservation land. There is no suburban zoning at all.

Where farms meet reserve, rat poison is a wildlife question. The strongest rat baits, the second-generation anticoagulants, have been suspended for a year from 24 March 2026, and BirdLife has found Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice covers what is still allowed.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Dixons Creek, Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb, APVMA: second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides to be restricted (March 2026) and BirdLife Australia: protect Aussie birds from SGAR rat poisons.

What the landowner has to do

Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act a landowner must take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, eradicate them; Cardinia's council, for one, counts wild rabbits among them. Snakes are the opposite case: protected, illegal to harm, and removed only by a licensed snake controller (136 186 has the list). Yarra Ranges doesn't remove them.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (Vic), s.20 (authorised version 072), Cardinia Shire Council: problem animals, DELWP: Living with snakes fact sheet (2021) and Yarra Ranges Council: snakes.

Building here

Black Saturday destroyed many houses in Dixons Creek. Any house built here now is in a designated termite area, as all of Yarra Ranges is. It has to be protected; a detached shed or garage does not. Termites explains the standard.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Dixons Creek, Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031) and Building and Plumbing Amendment Regulations 2026 (Vic), S.R. No. 38/2026, reg 12.
