Houses since 2009

The bushfire of 7 February 2009 destroyed at least 26 houses in Steels Creek. Whatever is built here now goes up in a designated termite area, since all of Yarra Ranges is one. New building work has to be protected against termites. A detached shed or garage is the exception. For a house you are buying, a timber pest inspection is the usual check. Termites explains both.

Nearly a third reserve

Steels Creek lies 7 km north of Yarra Glen. On the planning maps just over half of it is green wedge, nearly a third is park or reserve and about a sixth is rural conservation land; none is zoned for suburban houses.

Snakes are protected, and it is illegal to catch or kill one. Yarra Ranges won't remove them either; a licensed snake controller will, and 136 186 gives a list. A wasp nest on your own land is yours to have treated, as the council handles nests on council land only. Wasps and bees has the rest.
