A third of the town under heritage overlay

Warburton's valley land was surveyed and sold in 1884, and the town drew visitors from around the turn of the twentieth century. The Sanitarium Health Food and Signs Publishing buildings at 51 Main Street are on the Victorian Heritage Register. On the planning maps, about a third of the suburb is under a heritage overlay, with fifteen heritage places in all, more than Wesburn, Millgrove or Yarra Junction.

Termites

Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area. New building work has to be protected. For a building already standing, the check is a timber pest inspection under AS 4349.3, which is mostly non-invasive. Termites explains what that leaves out.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031) and Standards Australia: AS 4349.3-2010.

The river, the mountain and the park

The Yarra runs through the town, Mount Donna Buang rises above it, and the Upper Yarra Dam lies to the east. Over half of Warburton is park or reserve on the planning maps, and only about one part in fifty is zoned for houses.

If a possum gets into the roof, the rules are strict. A brushtail may be trapped humanely, but it has to be released on the same property, within 50 m. Taking it further is prohibited, and killing one needs an Authority to Control Wildlife. Possums covers keeping them out.

Checking the licence first

In Victoria it is illegal to apply pesticides in a pest control business without a licence from the Department of Health. The licence carries authorisations, and the timber pest and pest animal ones are separate, so check that it covers the job. The department's register can be searched by name. The licence sets out each type.
