Pest control in Yarra Junction

Yarra Junction is named for a tramway meeting a railway, and its station building is older than the town's post office.

A tramway and railway junction

The name comes from the meeting of the timber tramways and the Warburton railway, not of two rivers. The Powelltown Tramway met the main line here from 1913 to 1945. The station building was put up at Lilydale in 1888, moved here in 1914, and now houses the Upper Yarra Museum. Camp Eureka on Tarrango Road is on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Termites

The termite designation covers the whole of Yarra Ranges. New building work has to be protected. A house that is already up gets a timber pest inspection under AS 4349.3, which is mostly non-invasive. Termites has both standards.

Town streets and wet paddocks

Yarra Junction had 2,875 residents at the 2021 census, but land zoned for houses is only about a tenth of the suburb. Two thirds of it is green wedge and farming land, and about a seventh is marked on the planning maps as land subject to flooding.

Where water lies after rain, mosquitoes follow. The Department of Health's advice is to clear stagnant water from around the house and to avoid bites.

The inn, the RSL and other kitchens

Cunningham's Irish Inn and the RSL both trade in town. A food business must take all practicable measures to keep pests out of its premises and to eradicate them if they get in, under clause 24 of the Food Standards Code's Standard 3.2.2. The Code doesn't itself require a pest contract. Spiders and insects covers cockroaches and the licence that treats them.

The other towns on the Warburton Highway, under the same council.
Gladysdale and Hoddles Creek
To the south, with no land zoned for town houses at all. The council and the termite designation are the same.
