Pest control in Launching Place
Launching Place was named for logs sent down the Yarra, and about a sixth of it is still mapped as land that floods.

Low ground by the Yarra
The town is thought to take its name from the spot where cut logs were launched into the Yarra and floated down to Melbourne's sawmills. The river still sets the place up: there are camping grounds, and people come for the hiking and boating.
About a sixth of Launching Place is marked on the planning maps as land subject to flooding. Low ground holds water after rain, and the Department of Health's advice on mosquitoes is to get rid of stagnant water around the house and to avoid being bitten.

Mostly farm and bush blocks
Half the suburb is green wedge and farming land and about a third is rural living and conservation. Only a small part is zoned for ordinary town houses.
On land like that, pest animals are the owner's problem in law. Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act a landowner must take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, get rid of them. The Act lists no species, though Cardinia's council includes wild rabbits. Deer go to the council instead: Yarra Ranges has run a state-funded deer program since 2021, and its Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333. Who to call covers the rest.

The store and the hotel
The Launching Place General Store sits by the Warburton Rail Trail, with a new car park behind it, and the Home Hotel is in town. Any kitchen among them is bound by the Food Standards Code to take all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate any that get in. Spiders and insects has a section for food businesses.

Termites
The whole of Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area under the Building Regulations. New building work in Launching Place has to be protected. A detached shed or garage is the exception. Termites explains the standards.
Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031) and Building and Plumbing Amendment Regulations 2026 (Vic), S.R. No. 38/2026, reg 12.
Along the highway and off it
- Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction
- Either side on the Warburton Highway, with the same river flats and the same council.
- Gladysdale and Hoddles Creek
- East and south, up off the river. Still Yarra Ranges, so the termite designation and the landowner's duty don't change.
