Vineyards, berries and tree farms
Hoddles Creek has several vineyards, among them Hoddles Creek Estate, started by the D'Anna family in 1997, as well as berry farms and tree farms. Just over half the locality is green wedge and farming land on the planning maps, a quarter is rural living and conservation, and none is zoned for town houses.
On a farm, pest animals are the owner's responsibility. The Catchment and Land Protection Act requires a landowner to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, to eradicate them. Cardinia's council is one that names wild rabbits. Deer are handled through Yarra Ranges' deer program, on 1300 368 333. Who to call covers which animal goes to whom.

A fifth of it reserve
About a fifth of Hoddles Creek is park or reserve. Snakes are protected, and it is illegal to capture, harm or kill one. Yarra Ranges won't remove snakes even from public land, so the call is to a licensed snake controller, at the owner's cost; 136 186 gives a list.
Wasp nests are similar. The council treats them on its own land only, and a nest on private land is the owner's to have treated. A honeybee swarm goes to a beekeeper, often for a small fee or free. Wasps and bees explains.

Gold-rush history, and the building rules
Robert Hoddle surveyed the area in 1844, and the town grew out of the gold rush of the 1860s, beside Hoddles Creek and Blackleather Creek. It sits in Yarra Ranges' designated termite area. A new house or extension needs protection; a detached shed doesn't. Termites has the standard.

The farms around it
- Yellingbo and Gladysdale
- Farm and rural living land like Hoddles Creek, with no town zoning.
- Launching Place and Warburton
- The river towns to the north. All four are Yarra Ranges, so the termite designation and the council's rules carry across.
